Modern Buddhism – In-Depth Study Programmes

“These programs, therefore, are real wishfulfilling jewels for Dharma practitioners. By participating in them we can improve our wisdom and Dharma experience and use Dharma to solve our daily problems. We can become our own protector by protecting ourselves from danger and suffering, and our own doctor by curing our mental pain with Dharma medicine.”
– Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has designed three special spiritual study programmes for the systematic study and practice of Kadampa Buddhism that are especially suited to the modern world: the General Program (our drop-in classes), the Foundation Program, and the Teacher Training Program.

Foundation Programme

FP students enrollment offers all the benefits of being a KMC Southampton Member. These personal commitments combined with the special structure of the class (see below) enable us to take the most from our efforts to improve the quality of our mind and realize our full potential

The Foundation Programme provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding and experience of Buddhism through a systematic study of six texts. It is designed for those people who wish to study Buddha’s teachings in more depth than is available at General classes.

The Programme consists of a dynamic combination of teachings, meditation and discussion, all of which enable us to go deeper into the layers of meaning within each book that we study.  All of this helps us to make real progress along our spiritual path.  Each class consists of preliminary prayers, guided meditation and reading from the book with commentary and discussion.

We are currently studying ‘8 Steps to Happiness’ by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

There are many benefits to joining the Foundation Programme namely:

  • Increased personal insight, wisdom and experience of Dharma (Buddha’s teachings)
  • Studying and meditating more effectively following a specially-designed programme and qualified meditation teacher
  • An opportunity to discuss and ask questions
  • Help, support and friendship from like-minded people
  • Gain the ability to integrate Buddha’s instructions into busy modern life.

Foundation Programme is not a drop-in class.  Enrolment is required and we ask that everyone who enrols:

  • has a sincere personal commitment to try to attend each class,
  • will commit to at least 3 months after having one or two taster sessions.

Teacher Training Programme

Teacher Training Programme (TTP), offers practitioners of Kadampa Buddhism the opportunity to study deeply, gain practical experience of both Sutra and Tantra as well as train to become qualified Dharma teachers.

The programme consists of a dynamic combination of teachings, meditations, discussion and teaching skills classes providing a multi-faceted approach to the development of authentic spiritual experience. All qualified Kadampa teachers follow this in-depth program of study and practice.

The programme involves the study of twelve texts, students are required to observe certain commitments with regard to behaviour and way of life, and an intention to engage regular meditation retreats run at KMC Southampton.

We are currently studying ‘How to Understand the Mind’ by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

Gen Kelsang Lekma, Principal Teacher of KMC Southampton is the Teacher of TTP.

TTP is held on Sundays 2 – 6.15pm
